Fear |
19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, |
20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. |
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. |
22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. |
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: |
24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. |
25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; |
26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. |
27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; |
28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. |
29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; |
30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me. |
25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. |
26 Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the Lord. |
40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. |
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. |
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. |
4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. |
5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. |
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. |
7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, |
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. |
9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest. |
10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. |
Conversation |
11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. |
12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. |
Boldness is necessary |
13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me. |
14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. |
15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha. |
16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified. |
17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. |
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. |
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. |
Fear |
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. |
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? |
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. |
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: |
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; |
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. |
Confidence |
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. |
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: |
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; |
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: |
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. |
Shame |
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: |
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. |
